Course description:
This course is designed for second level students who had completed basic anatomy and physiology curses successfully. It contains the theories and skills necessary to collect comprehensive Health history, as a holistic approach which includes the interview with clients, psychosocial assessment, nutritional assessment, assessment of sleep-wakefulness patterns, and the health history.
And to perform complete physical assessment starting from general assessment, to “head to toe” assessment.
These skills will be mastered by the student as long as the student will practice it in different clinical areas or a skills lab inside the university under strict supervision.
The student can practice these skills and techniques on one anther or on properly informed clients.
During this course the focus will be on health history which is often neglected, The health history is considered the most important aspect of nursing health assessment since it alerts the student to potential problems based on the current functional health patterns of North American Nursing Diagnoses Association’s (NANDA), which clarify all functional health patterns that guide the students during their practice.
The course will go through different assessment techniques like inspection, palpation, percussion, and auscultation, then applying these techniques to perform a complete physical assessment for clients according to body systems.
Course objectives:
Upon successful completion of this course the student will be able to:-
Utilize facilitative communication to elicit a complete health history. Identify and use communication techniques that will fulfill interview purposes. Use empathy and acceptance in a therapeutic relationship. Clarify items of psychosocial assessment. Describe ways for assessing nutritional status. State and demonstrate four assessment techniques, used during a physical assessment and the different client’s positions during examination. State and demonstrate general inspection techniques, assessment of body parts, and assessment of vital signs. State related rationale and demonstrate assessment of all body systems. Distinguish between normal and abnormal assessment findings. Formulate nursing diagnoses based on (NANDA).

v. The health history.
vi. Functional health patterns (NANDA).
vii. Assessment techniques.
viii. General Assessment including vital signs.
ix. Assessment of skin, hair, and nails.
x. Assessment of the ears, nose, and throat.
xi. Assessment of the eyes.
xii. Assessment of the head, face, and neck.
xiii. Assessment of the breasts.
xiv. Assessment of the lymphatic system.
xv. Assessment of the respiratory system.
xvi. Assessment of the cardiovascular system.
xvii. Assessment of the abdomen.
xviii. Assessment of the anus and recto sigmoid region.
xix. Assessment of the musculoskeletal system.
xx. Assessment of mental status.
xxi. Assessment of the neurological system.
xxii. Assessment of male genital.
xxiii. Assessment of female genital.
Teaching methods:
Lectures. Discussion and Participation Audiovisual aids. Demonstration in skill lab Clinical practice under supervision.
