Course Description: The course deals with the following topics: introduction , ecosystems , Biochemical Cycles , Ecological factors , Population Ecology, the Ecology of Biotic communities.

 

 Prerequisite:Introduction to Earth Sciences .

Course Aims:

·      Understanding of  the  concepts necessary for the other courses(WWT ,Pollution Control)

·      Understanding of  the component of the ecosystems

·      Understanding of  the relation between biotic and abiotic factors.

 

Course Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):

·      Enabling student to deal with ecological concepts easily.

·      Forming ecological sense for the student to evaluate the environmental issues .

 

Grading: Grades will be determined as Follows:

 

Quizzes                           10%

Midterm 1                      15 %

Midterm 2                     15 %

Final                             60%    

Course Outlines

  Iintroduction : Definitions, history of relation between man & environment ( 1 hr)

  Ecosystems: the concept , fllow of energy , food chains , ecological peramids , components of ecosystem , stability of ecosystem  ( 6 hrs)

  Biogeochemical Cycles : the concept ( water , carbon , oxgyen , nitrogen , phosphorous , sulpher ) Cycles   ( 6 hrs)

 Ecological factors : the concept , the law of tolerance , ( T0c , Lighte , water , wind , niutriants, salinity , fire ) factors (8 hrs)

Population Ecology:concept of Population. Population size,density,distribution,and growth.The age structure.Home ranges.(6hrs)

the Ecology of Biotic communities: Structure , diversity , domenant , nich, classification of biotic communities , ecological succession , biological interrelationshipes (6 hrs)
