To spice up your writing  and hold other people’s attention, vary your sentence type, length, style and layout . Adding variety to your speech or writing keeps people interested and can keep the emphasis where you want it.

There are many different ways available to organise words into effective sentences. (Or I might say, words can be arranged in different ways to produce sentences effectively.) Therefore,  you need to make sure that each sentence you write can be expressed in a dozen of ways. What impact you are trying to have on readers affects your variety choice, words order, word choice,  and sentence length and type.  That could be as easy as baking a cake into different shapes and sizes providing you give it a lot of practice and work. There are some easy steps to follow. But Remember: they are not formulaic.

Some steps are(some are repeated in other words for emphasis):

Remember: Do not overuse rare structures inversion and split infinitive.

1)      sentence type(1- He is sick- 2- He is sick, so he is absent 3- He is absent because he is sick)

2)      subject verb inversion (neVer will Palestinians give up. – Rarely do I have a dream)

3)      relative clauses(The guy who is holding the umbrella is my friend)

4)      noun clauses(That I will be travelling to the states soon is a mere rumour)

5)      reduction (the guy holding the umbrella is my friend)

6)      modifying clauses

7)      passive (that umbrella is held by my brother)

8)      expletive (there is a man holding un umbrella )

9)      appositive (G. Washington, the first president of the United States, took oath on April 30, 1789)

10)  prepositional (The man broke in the house with a gun in his hand)

11)  conjunctives (He likes tea. However, he does not like coffee)

12)  synonyms.

13)  Adjective beginning(tired, I went upstairs to sleep)

14)  “-ly” beginning (Cheerfully, she answered the phone for her mother.)

15)  “-ing” at beginning or end (Saving the best for last, Lisa finally ate her Reese’s peanut butter cup. OR He trudged along the hot desert for days, wishing he had brought more water.)

16)  Balanced sentences (He goes out onto the baseball field, spins around second base, and looks back at the academy.)

17)  Dependent clause(Because it rained, the garden party was postponed.)

18)  Informative interrupters. The child, face covered with chocolate doughnut, asked his mother if he could have some milk.

19)  participles

20) split infinitive (he insisted to completely destroy his enemy)

21) question form (he is sick?)

22) exclamation (He is sick!)

23) simile and metaphor (The Gates of hell open tomorrow(meaning school))

How many ways can you rewrite, expand, reorder, reword these ten boring sentences?

  1. The sky is blue.
